Results from water use efficiency trials during 2010 indicate that controlling summer weeds is important not just to conserve moisture, but to conserve soil nitrogen for future crops. CSIRO's Sustainable Agriculture flagship is supporting the Grains Research and Development Corporation's National Water Use Efficiency (WUE) Research Program, with the aim of improving WUE by 10 per cent. During the past two years 16 regional projects have been established in low-, medium- and high-rainfall zones to build on earlier research. Results are identifying the potential benefits from different management responses to rainfall, depending on the timing of rainfall.
