Grain growers can get much more from their fertiliser budgets by checking their soil phosphorus levels before sowing and more directly targeting crop inputs that are clearly nutrient-limited, according to recent results. Work by independent consultantAndrew Speirs during 2008 has shown that every dollar invested in nutrient analysis returned an additional 10.60 dollar. This confirms a 2001-2007 study in Victoria and New South Wales where Andrew and David Harbison found that applying an extra lOkilograms ofphosphorus to a deficient soil delivered an extra tonne of grain per hectare in an average year.
