Thinking outside the box

Until the beginning of 2011 theJewel Garden at Longmeadow was about a third bigger than it is now. This was because the area thats now filled with grasses - perhaps prosaically called the Grass Borders - was once a continuation of the Jewel Garden, its beds filled with the same rich colours from the first tulip to the last brave showing of a dahlia. Each of these four large extrabeds was bounded by box hedges, as are those in the Jewel Garden.But when we started to film Gardeners' World here in February 2011, we made the decision to lose some jewels and gain some grasses by converting the area furthest from the house into completely separate borders.So the jewel flowers were redistributed around the reduced Jewel Garden in return for a variety of grasses that had been scattered around the whole area. I then added more grasses and, hey presto, the grass borders came into being.
