Anyone who played high school football and studied game film, undoubtedly has heard the rants of a coach who screamed, "Pay attention to this play. See that? That's exactly the way NOT to do it." That's the sort of the approach William B. Miller and Vicki L. Schenk took in penning this month s Novel Solutions book selection, All I Need to Know About Manufacturing I Learned in Joe's Garage (Bayrock Press, 2001). Like our previous book in the series, The Goal (see below), this selection reveals keys to cost-reduction and time compression that can offer a foundry salvation in this environment. In this light read (you'll finish it over a couple of coffee breaks or on a flight even before your beverage is served), the authors creatively relay the shortfalls of traditional manufacturing management. The story is told from the perspective of Sandy, a manufacturing engineer for a gear company that is recruited, along with 20-some others, to help his boss, Joe, construct and assemble shelves for his home garage one Saturday morning. (OK, perhaps the biggest piece of fiction of all.) On his way over to Joe's place, he runs into a neighbor, Ralph Morita, who works at a rival Japanese gear manufacturer, who also offers to pitch in for the day.
