The USDA attache predicts a sharp increase in 2009 molasses use for fuel alcohol to 1.52 mln tonnes from 1.16 mln in the prior calendar year. Cassava consumption for fuel alcohol is to rise modestly to 218,400 tonnes from 196,560 while cane consumption for this purpose is seen up by 10,000 tonnes at 70,000. Alcohol production capacity is 1.7 mln litres per day and may rise to 2.0 mln by early 2010. The total number of licences is currently 47 with a combined daily alcohol production potential of around 12.3 mln litres per day.
