BRAZILIAN CROP WOES LEAVE MARK ON WORLD RANKING OF ETHANOL PRODUCERS

While the international alcohol industry continues to be highly fragmented geographically, the sector is much more concentrated than other agricultural processing businesses. By our calculations, the top ten group of companies were responsible for around 31% of 2011 global output which was up by about 3 percentage points on 2010. This was mainly due to the growing concentration in the US where some industry majors added new plants to their portfolios although other, mostly smaller players shut down capacity, either temporarily or permanently.
