Taking on the challenge

At face value it would appear that Lemogang Pitsoe, the chief operating officer (COO) of diamond mining company Afgem, based his decision to study mining engineering because he was born and bred in the mineral rich Bafokeng nation in the North West Province. However, when asked how he had the wherewithal to take this decision Pitsoe explains that it was more a question of chance than anything else, "Both my parents are teachers and my sister and brother are medical practitioners, and I did not want to follow in their footsteps. As a result, when an Anglo American representative came to my school for a presentation, I decided, like my friends did, to apply for a bursary to study mechanical engineering. Mining engineering was my second choice."
