The dual mass flywheel is here to stay. That's the defiant message from German clutch maker LuK following reports in the consumer and aftermarket press that DMFs are prone to faults and expensive to replace. As part of its counter-offensive, LuK gave a media presentation at its Buehl HQ near Baden Baden where two of the key themes were cost and reliability. LuK tackled the cost issue by citing a VW Bora/Golf 1.9TDI - a vehicle it claims as "representative" of the workshop price band - and said a DMF and clutch replacement, including labour, is around £455 - £55 more than a so-called 4-in-1 conversion kit. But with the better fuel economy offered by DMF, the company says this extra cost can be recouped in nine months, assuming the vehicle does 10,000 miles a year.
