"It has tremendous implications for the future - it is a key to poverty alleviation and closing the gap between rich and poor nations, providing improved living conditions and access to more choices," he said. One initiative of sustainable development was the Global Mining Initiative established in 1998 following a meeting with chief executives from around the world to discuss the state of the industry.
