When Canadian resources house Teck Cominco Ltd announced last year it would be extending the life of its Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia to 2013, there would have been no doubt in the company's corporate mind that it was going to handle the expected increase in copper concentrate production on site. During the past 14 years the miner -through its wholly-owned subsidiary Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - has developed a novel and efficient hydrometallurgical processing route for the refining of both copper and nickel concentrates. Proven technologies The method, known as the CESL Process, uses proven technologies like pressure oxidation, solvent extraction and electrowinning, but combines them in a novel way.
