Michigan oil and gas drilling down slightly in first quarter from first quarter 2005

MT.PLEASANT,Mich.- First quarter 2006 Michigan oil and gas drilling activity was down by just over 6 percent compared to activity during the same period of 2005,with drilling having been completed on a total of 89 holes between Jan.1 and March 31,2006,according to statistics compiled this month by Michigan Oil & Gas News(MOGN).Oil and gas drilling permit issuance during the first quarter was off by nearly 11 percent compared to the first quarter of 2005,with a total of 177 permits issued during the months of January,February,and March.The first quarter 2005 permit total of 198 was the highest seen in Michigan for a first quarter since 1997,when 244 permits were issued in the first quarter.
