Scientists likely have a different view of the metric system than the average citizen. Most scientists in my field, atmospheric science, use metric units almost exclusively, except when they have public-facing duties that require the use of non-metric, such as in weather forecasts. This is maintained because of the incomplete U.S. conversion to metric and the largely non-metric expectations of the public.
