FIVE WEEKS IN AUSTRALIA

Australia is the most metric country I have ever visited; more so than any of the traditionally metric countries. Congratulations are in order for all of the people involved in the transition to the metric system. My observations cover the eastern half of Australia, including Tasmania, but it seemed to me that there would not be much difference in this matter throughout Australia, judging from the uniformity among the eastern states. This is what I noticed. With one or two exceptions (e.g., knots), there were no non-metric units used anywhere. Similarly, there were no dual units, with one exception--kJ and Cal. So let's start with that subject, food package labeling.
