Compact cold mill at steel dynamics for economic production of cold rolled strip in mini-mills

Steel Dynamics operates a new mini-mill for flat rolled steel products. For the economic cold rolling of about 1 million t/year strip a new compact cold rolling mill concept has been jointly developed by Steel Dynamics and SMS. This mill, a two-stand reversing mill with two entry and one exit reels, enables the production of cold strip up to 1600 mm wide in the thickness range of 2.2-0.4 mm and different rolling strategies. It incorporates new direct driven high tension reels and a special dry strip system. Since its smooth start-up its capacity has already been expanded.
