We all want a safe railway, that's a given, but the Office of Rail and Road's belief that all Mk.1 charter coaches should have central door locking (CDL) fitted or be removed from the network is wholly unnecessary and totally unwelcome. I get the need for CDL should there be train after train of Mk.l stock, operating all over the network and taking commuters on a tight schedule into major cities as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, with people opening doors - and even alighting - before their train came to a standstill.
