Having admired the work of Roche Dinkeloo as students, Denise and I made a bee-line to see theFord Foundation on our first trip to New York in 1979.In a city famous for skyscrapers, it is a street-building that doesn’t dominate, so for us it was atemplate for architecture that didn’t need to shout for attention.It certainly had presence, though – accentuated by the vast atrium garden that inspired a newapproach to large commercial buildings within an urban block.
