Context and setting We used a multispecialty paediatric practice in an urban children's hospital to examine whether paediatric residents' ratings of educational experiences correlated with the operational efficiency of the 8 different clinics they attended in the course of 1 year. Why the idea was necessary We observed informally that residents reported higher levels of educational satisfaction with clinics that operated efficiently and, conversely, dissatisfaction with those that operated inefficiently. In our study, visits were 1? hours in duration. Clinics that completed the patient visit in an hour were considered efficient and those that took close to 2 hours were considered inefficient. We tested this relationship by comparing measures of residents' ratings of the educational experience in 8 specialty clinics with a measure of each clinic's efficiency. We were unable to find any medical literature that examined the relationship between resident educational experience and the operational efficiency of clinics or practices as learning environments.
