The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy completed its count of members' votes on the merger with the IoM on 20 February and confirmed a majority of 86 percent in favour Professor Jane Plant, President of the IMM, acknowledged the strong synergy between both organisations. 'Combining our two organisations and resources will secure the long-term future for members of our profession,' she said. An enlarged and financially-strong organisation will be able to move into new areas of opportunity and growth.' Dr Bruce Farmer, chairman of the negotiating team that started the development of a merger agreement in November 2000, said, 'It is very much in the interests of both organisations to merge and to build on the strengths of both and form a robust body to deal with future challenges.'
