Efficiency of biological silage additives: results of approval trials

By collating efficiency tests carried out for some 15 years on 26 biological silage additives, it was possible to demonstrate the efficiency of the products (14 in all) that were officially approved in comparison with control silages (without additive or with formic acid), to assess the validity of the methods used in these trials, and to determine the minimum threshold of soluble sugar content in the forage required to ensure a good conservation quality with these approved substances. Official approval provides the marketed products with a guarantee as regards safety (composition, variability, etc.) and efficiency (when used as additives to forages with sugar contents in the DM above or equal to 11%).
