GREAT LAKES

Wyse Glass of Freeland, Michigan was again the site of the Fall Meeting of the ASGS Great Lakes Section. Wyse Glass has been a major GL meeting contributor over the many decades since the inception of the ASGS and a favorite site for Great Lakes Section founders and sustaining members. This was proven true by the participation of several of our most senior retirees as highlighted in the accompanying photo. Among them, Willard Wyse (founder of Wyse Glass), Earl Sprague (Past owner Wyse Glass), Stan Mikols (former Dow Chemical Co. Glass Shop Supervisor), Pete Severn, (former Univ. of Michigan glassblower), Ray Steiner (past GL Director and formerly of the Burroughs Corp., Univ. of Michigan and the Bendix Corp.) and Arthur Dolenga (formerly of General Motors Corp. and past ASGS President). Fred Hackett and Larry Novak formerly of the Dow Chemical Co. were in attendance but not shown in the photo.Randy Hansen (SC Glass Tech) came from the west coast to attend and offer insight in the form of an impromptu report concerning his difficulties of pro & con interactions with local fire marshals. This on-going issue has been a national concern. Lacking specific scientific glassblowing safety guidelines, fire marshals often seek to regulate safety by referring to welding standards and codes. This is a large professional problem, which often creates unnecessary havoc for scientific glassblowing practitioners.
