Deposits at the Canadian Clonal Genebank guarantee future yields. The program is an investment in a priceless gene pool of Canadian fruit varieties and their relatives. If these old varieties weren't maintained, their genes, which may be resistant tonew diseases or pests, would not be available to breeders and farmers in the future. The program was established in 1989 at the Smithfield Experimental Farm near Trenton, Ontario. Over the past few months, it has relocatedto new facilities at the Greenhouse and Processing Crops Research Centre in Harrow, Ontario.
