Apply sawfly first observed in Quebec orchards in '79

The following is taken from a presentation by Dr. Vincent at the 2.3rd annual Ontario Horticultural Crops Conference in Toronto, His presentation was entitled, Management of Early Season Pests in Apple Orchards. Among all the insect pests assocl-ated-with apple orchards, the apply sawfly, Hoplocampa testudinea Klug (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) has a particular status. First, it is the only Hymenopteran (Symphyta) insect that attacks apple. Second, adult activity is maximal during bloom. Because pollination by wild or domesticated bees is critical for pollination, insecticide treatments against the apple sawfly are proscribed during bloom. Third, there are no methods tq rear the insect and, consequently, research has to be done in the field or semi-field conditions.
