High density Ontario peach orchards: a dream or a reality?

In the business plan for the Ontario Tender Fruit Industry, it states: "The underlying aim of enhancing productivity is to increase the dollar value of production per dollar of cost." Ontario tender fruit producers, therefore, are looking for technology that will increase their production efficiency and give them a competitive advantage to improve the stability and profitability of the industry. Recent research at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario (HRIO) at Vineland Station, Ontario has shown that peach productivity can be increased by 15 per cent if orchardists adopt central leader pruning technology. Additionally, labour is reduced significantly.
