Collaborating for Success in Research

I have been reading The Second Brain by Michael D. Gershon, a wonderful book that I recommend to all gastroenterology nurses. Dr. Gershon is a physician and neuroscientist who devoted his career to studying the body's enteric nervous system, which functions just like a second brain. He gives a clear, entertaining explanation of the activities that occur in the gastrointestinal system and its accessory organs {liver, pancreas, and gall bladder). He also describes how his research progressed from an initial interest in serotonin as a medical student, through the testing of his theory that serotonin was an enteric neurotransmitter, and finally to his struggles trying to convince the.scientific community that there is a separate brain in the gut. I was struck by one recurring theme in the book: the frequency of the author's collaboration with others throughout his research endeavors.
