When England and Scotland took the initiative for a successful Fruit for Schools campaign trialed in 2001, and successfully launched in 2004, government decided to do it alone without EU funding. The result was a cost of around E40 million covering 16,000 state run primary schools for children aged between four to six years old. The scheme is due to be reviewed next year. However, with a change of government intent on tighter budgetary control the Fresh Produce Consortium, the trade body which represents the industry, has requested clarification over whether the initiative will continue, according to chief executive Nigel Jenny.
