Precious apples and pears

The data presented at this year's Prognosfruit conference held in Kiev suggest that the apple and pear industries will be earning a pretty penny this year. In early August some 300 conference delegates from 20 countries met in the capital of Ukraine to discuss the global crop forecasts for apples and pears. This year's European pear crop is estimated at 2.16 mio t which is the lowest level of production in the past 20 years. The effects on prices can already be noticed for the early varieties. In Germany the pear crop is estimated at 46,000 t, a decrease of 12% compared to the previous year. The reason for the small volume is related to cold and wet weather during the first months of the year.
