In the early 1990s cocopeat entered the market and growers, mainly rose growers started to use it as a substrate. Production in terms of high yield, low incidence of disease and good rose colour, proved to be good and growers of other crops, including vegetables began to give it a try. However, they weren't as successful as the rose growers and sooner or later productivity of the other crops started to fall and disappointed growers returned to or tried other media.
