Calls to replace peat with up to 90% of alternative substrates lead to a project to develop a suitable compost. Growers have shown no interest in the product. The use of peat has been getting a bad name in some quarters. UK retailers probably have rea cted most strongly to claims by environmentalists that peat is scarce, non-renewable and that its extraction damages the environment, It has led some of the large UK retail chains to demand that plants are delivered in peat-free substrates or at least 90 % peat replacers. There is talk that some large supermarkets may want to sell "peat-free vegetables" in the future following the trend for biologically grown food.
