Treated glass solar panels allow more light to enter the greenhouse than ordinary glass, resulting in about 10% extra PAR transmission, a discovery made by accident in Germany. Aformer research plant for nuclear power is proving to be a valuable sitefor the study of plants and the effect the environment has on them. At the research centre in Julich, Germany one of three nuclear reactors still function but research has turned away from nuclear power and looks into innovations in other forms of energy, medicine and environmental science, including horticulture. The new institutes still have special profiles - partly because they use the special infrastructure of the research site. For example, it is the availability of isotopes with a short half-lifewhich gives research on the site an extra valuable dimension. It means that radioactive molecules, with a very short half-life of sometimes just 20 minutes can be traced through a plant without destroying it. There is hardly any time wasted in transporting the molecules from site of manufacture to site of use. In more usual circumstances the atoms would already have decayed to a point that they are no longer useful.
