Functional properties of some surface roughness parameters

Functional surfaces (surfaces equipped with functions for achieving such objectives as slippery surface, glossy surface, etc.) of mechanical parts can be separated into surface form components and evaluated, in order from the longest wavelength, as form, waviness profile, roughness profile, and noises and other signals. While this kind of separation can be conducted with filters 1, the cut-off value (the wavelength or frequency where the filter attenuation ratio reaches 50) that is the basis for this separation is usually determined by experience. For this reason, no official efforts have been made to determine whether the roughness parameter that is found via waviness profiles or roughness profiles is suitable for expressing surface functions.
