摘要

'Does anyone want to go on exchange?' That was the appealing e-mail that went out during Sam Coggins's first semester on the forestry degree course he was taking at the University of Wales, Bangor. The choices were: Vancouver, Canada for a year or Joensuu, Finland for a semester. Having a ready met enthusiastic exchange students from Germany, Austria and Namibia, Sam, decided to follow their example, plumping for the North American option. Canada - as he reports here from BC (in the first of four articles) - has proved to be an 'amazing experience'. Firstly, a word about Sam's background: for a 25-year-old, he already boasted a diverse career in forestry. Born and raised in the Chiltern Hills, Bucks, Sam - now on the second year of his Bangor program - got in touch with his local forester while still at school and helped to clear up after previous years' storms.
