Analysis of bioactive compounds in seven citrus cultivars.

Chemical composition of peels from clementine mandarins (cv. Fino, Loretina and Marisol), satsuma mandarins (cv. Owari), navel oranges (cv. Navelate and Navelina) and common oranges (cv. Valencia Late) were investigated. Effects of variety on contents of bioactive compounds were evaluated. Similar contents of most compounds were observed in the different cultivars, although Satsuma peels contained highest amounts of hesperidin, narirutin, and beta-cryptoxanthin. Mandarin and orange varieties contained similar amounts of other phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid. Limonene was the most abundant peel essential oil component in all cultivars studied, followed by myrcene. Ca and K were the predominant minerals in all samples, but relative amounts of various nutrients differed between cultivars.
