BOTH the dairy animal and the microbial population residing in the rumen require nutrients for health and productivity. Feed is the primary source of nutrients for both the animal and rumen microbes. Dairy animals with functioning rumens are in a symbiotic relationship with rumen microbes and rely on microbes and microbial fermentation products for additional nutrients beyond feed. Nutrient requirements of both the animal and rumen microbial population must be taken into account when formulating diets for dairy cattle.Feeding a diet that optimizes rumen fermentation and meets the nutrient requirements of the animal will achieve the best animal performance, be the most cost-effective feeding program and minimize nutrient excretion into the environment. Guidelines for meeting the nutrient requirements of both animal and rumen microbes are presented.
