摘要

Internal parasites pose a significant problem for livestock producers in Australia, causing annual losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. One such parasite, barber's pole worm, is a problem for wool growers. CSIRO research on genetic andphysical variations between different strains of barber's pole worm should help producers develop better management strategies to minimise the impact of this parasite. CSIRO scientists have identified significant genetic and physical differences betweenstrains of barber's pole worm from different locations, as well as variations in the virulence of these strains. These findings reinforce the importance of graziers quarantining and drenching new sheep before integrating them into their existing flocks. Most graziers operating in areas susceptible to parasites such as barber's pole worm (Haemonchus contortus) or buying sheep from areas where the parasites are prevalent need to quarantine and drench new sheep.
