Showers continued to frustrate harvest over the past week, but combines were out where possible and the first of the wheat is now cut. "We've got tiny bits cut in the typically early regions - so far quality is OK, but variable, as you would expect with very early wheats," said Simon Christensen at Frontier. Guy Smith started cutting his Alchemy and Solstice in Essex last week, with yields 10-20% above average. "If the Solstice doesn't touch 10t/ha (At/acre) I'll be disappointed," he said. His Pearlwinter barley yielded over 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre) and had all been moved at 1.6-1.7% nitrogen. "It's the best barley I've ever grown - it was a phenomenal crop."
