Easy calving and aiming for the highest possible daily carcass gain are key drivers of profitability in suckled calf production. However, herd health and good nutrition are just as critical throughout the production process. Calves bred at Simon Frost's Hopping Farm near Bakewell are sold in mid-October for intensive finishing to Alan and John Dore who farm at Glapwell near Chesterfield.
