Good year for winter barley yields

It has been a good year for winter barley in HGCA variety trials. "Two-thirds of the way through our 20 or so sites the overall yield is about 0.4t/ha up on the four-year average," says Recommended Lists manager Jim McVittie. "It's much as growers arefinding." Among the malting varieties, Flagon, whose initial performance was dragged down by a poor result on unsuitable land in Oxfordshire, has recovered to be only slightly behind Pearl, he notes.
