The dry growing season is showing the value of hybrid barley varieties, with demand for them exceeding all expectations, say experts. "Hybrids hold their tillers better," explains Jim Carswell of Frontier Agriculture. "That means they can take up nitrogen at a faster rate, as they develop better root systems. So they've been able to cope with the lack of rain, while others have struggled."
