As with any diversification, you must be sure your strategy is right and that you have considered all the options. Your buildings, location, access and planning are all crucial factors, says Will Barton of Bidwells' rural enterprise team. "Next, it depends on your personal situation, what capital is available, what are the other funding options and resources on the farm, and your appetite for risk. "The returns from on-farm storage can be rather modest, compared with other diversification schemes, but storage is generally a low-risk venture and sometimes fits the bill nicely. "It can be a good first-step diversification because it often requires relatively little change to buildings and can help to preserve them for another future development"
