REGIONAL FARM INCOMES

Articles in this series have, so far, covered Farm Business Incomes in England and in the other devolved administrations of the UK. Compared to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, however, England has a relatively large land mass and it is intuitively highly likely that, underlying the data for England as a whole, there will be significant variations between farm types across the country, reflecting local conditions ranging from the northeast to the southwest. Farm Business Incomes include the income derived from all activities taking place based on the farm: from agriculture, from various types of environmental payments, from diversification into a variety of non-agricultural enterprises and inevitably, the Single Farm Payment. Roger Dean has been trawling through the data and finds that the role of the Single Farm Payment is, once again, ubiquitous.
