Postgraduate training in dentistry

Nineteen ninety eight saw the introduction of dental specialist lists in the United Kingdom but, some 20 years on, it seems that we still don't have a system for planning either the numbers of specialists or the number of people in training to become one. We are all aware of the National Health Service's financial difficulties and the shift in activity from secondary into primary care. There is logic, convenience and some useful economies in seeking to provide care for patients that is closer to home or work, and easier for them to access. The development of Care Pathways and Managed Clinical Networks for care is likely to result in benefits for patients, but their effectiveness will depend on having the right skill-mix in appropriate geographical locations. Managed Networks of Care Pathways will require a broad range of skilled oral healthcare professionals, including dental care professionals (DCPs), primary care general dentists and primary care dentists with enhanced skills, as well as specialists and consultants.
