Social support for terror-related victims: The Israeli system

Since its foundation, the State of Israel has been affected by terror violence toward its civilian population. For more than 45 years, the Israeli legislation has built a legal insurance allowing citizens casualties of such violence to benefit from specific coverage and support. The objective of this article is to describe the history, legal framework, and organization of social support for terror victims in Israel. ^g>terrorism, terror victims, support, disability, legal, Israel The State of Israel has been victim of terror actions such as suicide bombings, shootings, or stab-bings that have resulted in many dead and wounded. The objective of this article is to detail the framework by which victims of terrorism are socially supported and compensated. Legal framework In 1970, the Victims of Terror Law was enacted by the Israeli Parliament.1 In 1977, the law was applied retroactively to all victims injured since November 29, 1947. Various other additions have been made over time: the definition of a hostile action, creation of the authority in charge of the recognition of an incident as a hostile act, and the recognition of disabilities. The Act has also been extended to widows and orphans whose parents died during hostile action. The Law guarantees various social and medical assistance compensation to these victims and their families. The
