Vanco Farms' managers are quite familiar with the crop ... and quite encouraged by market opportunities. Prompted by the ongoing challenges in the potato industry, the owners of Vanco Farms Ltd. in Prince Edward Island are returning to their family roots and growing hundreds of thousands of tulips. Brothers Rit and Willem Van Nieuwenhuyzen, along with their father Peter, planted two-and-half acres of tulip bulbs in the fall of 2003. When harvested in July of 2004, the bulk of those bulbs were sold to greenhouse operations in Ontario.
