Derek Hawksworth

Derek Hawksworth was born in Sheffield in 1928, His parents were members of Burngreave Congregational Church. He was baptised at Burngreave and later, as one of the senior boys of the Sunday School he was responsible for stamping the younger children's Star Cards for attendance; one of those children was Rosie. They were married at Burngreave on 26 March 1955; sadly Derek died the day before their 54th wedding anniversary In 1957, Jane was born and she too was baptised at Burngreave, by her grandfather. In 1939, Derek passed the examination for admission of scholars to secondary schools in Sheffield; he came 17th out of 1032 boys and this earned him a scholarship to King Edward's School which, in those days, was fee paying. Standing him in good stead for the Hebrew he was to struggle with many years later, there, he studied classics, retaining and using the Latin and the Ancient Greek that he learned at school, right until the end.
