First Quantum Minerals is acquiring exploration company Kiwara plc for approximately 260.2 million US dollars in cash and shares. Kiwara has a controlling interest in licences in Zambia's North Western Province that which include the pre-feasibility stage Kalumbila copper project, the Kawoko nickel prospect and the Kawanga uranium prospect. First Quantum is also buying the Ravensthorpe nickel operation in Western Australia from BHP Billiton for 340 million US dollars. Ravensthorpe, which consists of an opencast mine and hydrometallurgical plant that produces a mixed nickel-cobalt hydroxide, was completed in 2007 but operations were suspended in January 2009 due to the low nickel price.
