The rather long period since the last news report has seen a number of developments in the Department. In April, we welcomed Johann Diener as lecturer in metamorphic petrology. Johann joined us from the University of Melbourne, where he completed a PhD with Roger Powell in which he applied mineral equilibria modeling to reworked granulites from central Australia. Johann is returning to the Western Cape, having previously completed his Honours and M.Sc. degrees at Stellenbosch. He brings much needed expertise in thermodynamics, Afrikaans and driving kombis through sand. Alakendra (Roy) Roychoudhury will leave the Department at the end of August to take up a post at Stellenbosch University. Roy arrived in 2001 to teach our Environmental Geochemistry M.Sc. course, and has latterly been teaching geology to Civil Engineering students. Roy's expertise in aqueous geochemistry will be greatly missed and we wish him well in his new job. We will not be able to replace Roy, but have been given permission to replace one of our longest serving academic staff members, John Rogers, when he retires at the end of 2009. This position will probably be advertised in mid 2009 at lecturer level, and the successful applicant will be required to teach sedimentology. We would be interested to hear from anybody who is interested in this post.
