Colin Brian Anderson (1943-2004)

Colin Anderson was born in Abercorn, Northern Rhodesia (now Mbala, Zambia) in October 1943. His father, being in administration in Zambia, took Colin and his family to many outposts, including Mongu in the Western Province, which accounts for his varied primary schooling and his dispatch as a boarder for his secondary schooling at the Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town. He initially attended the University of Natal in Pietermaritzberg (1961-62) before going to Rhodes University, Grahamsfown where he completed a three-major BSc degree in Geology, Zoology and Entomology before completing his Honours in Geology in 1966. During the time he was at Rhodes he ventured back to Natal where he successfully completed the Comrades Marathon. He was appointed mineralogist at the Rhodesia Geological Survey in December 1 966, taking a special interest in the public, his curatorship of the MacGregor Geological Museum and in publishing on the identification of Lithium-bearing pegmatite minerals. He relinquished this post to Susan Warner (later to become his wife) in 1969 and took up the regional geological field mapping of the Chimanda area east of Rushinga along the lower Mazowe Valley.
