Anglovaal Mining (Avmin) announced the acquisition of the remaining 25 percent stake in the Nkomati nickel operation, held by Anglo American, at a cost of R260-million. The acquisition would be settled in cash with funds obtained from a South African institution. The JV managed by Avmin since its inception in 1995, is South Africa's only primary nickel mine. The mine, which employs 100 people, also produces copper, cobalt and PGM's. Swiss company, Xstrata and South African chrome producer, Chrome & Alloys announced an agreement by which both companies would place their South African assets into a shared venture to be known as Xstrata-SA Chrome. The deal would enable Xstrata to ultimately fulfill their equity requirements under the South African Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the mining charter. The shared venture will contribute ~26% of current global ferrochrome output.
