Maggie Newman, a local artist living in Kimberley, was commissioned by De Beers Geology to paint a series of pictures illustrating the geological diamond story of Kimberley. Maggie was born in England and started working in the Natural History Museum in London as the assistant to the curator of fossil mammals. Despite having no formal artistic training she soon became an expert illustrator of fossils working at London University on a Karoo fossil project. She moved to Nigeria where she worked as the display artist at the Ife Museum. Her next move was to South Africa where she has worked on numerous projects - display artist at the Port Elizabeth Museum and freelance work for the Mossel Bay Museum, Karoo National Park, Cango Caves, Sam Knott Nature Reserve, Baviaanskloof nature Reserve, Victoria West Museum and the McGregor Museum in Kimberley.
