DuPont's Zytel lightens Lenovo laptop

Lenovo has switched to using Dupont's Zytel HTN PPA resin to make a lightweight housing for the IdeaPad U550.The IdeaPad U550 weighs only 2.4kg, thanks, in part, to the use of the Zytel material for the rear and bottom covers. Both covers were previously produced using a PC/ABS blend, but changing to Zytel HTN allowed Lenovo to reduce the wall thickness from 1.8mm to 1.3 mm, a reduction of more than 25%, says DuPont."Material stiffness is one of the critical requirements for the mechanical stability of a laptop's cover, which has to protect the sensitive electrical components inside the laptop as well as the LCD screen," says Aric Dai Huafeng, research and development director of the IdeaPad product group at Lenovo. "The improved flexural modulus (approximately 17 GPa) and flexural strength (approximately 300 MPa) of Zytel HTN makes it the material of choice for theproduction of these thinner, lighter and more cost-effective covers."
